Carbondale - Watercolor
Two elements I showed in my painting are shape/form and perspective. I think the form of the gazebo came across really well and the interesting shape draws the eye. The perspective is shown in both the gazebo and the tree line. The gazebo looks 3D with the perspective shown of the back wall and the smaller tree line gives perspective as well. Two principles I used were emphasis and movement. The gazebo and bush are emphasized because they are the biggest and main focus of the piece. I think there’s a lot of movement in the painting shown through the tree line, pond, and sky. My eye moves across the tree line as it goes behind the gazebo and the grass leading up to the pond shows both movement and a change in perspective. There is movement in the sky through the clouds and the change in color. The subject matter of the painting is a scenic view of a winery in Carbondale. The content of the picture includes a gazebo, pond, tree line, partly cloudy sky, and various greenery. The composition is shown as the piece is split by the rule of thirds with the grass in the bottom, tree line in the middle and sky on top. The gazebo is in the foreground and is surrounded by other nature and shrubbery that aren’t too distracting.
This is Me - Still Life
The two elements I really focused on in this painting were form and value. I spent a lot of time trying to get the form of my elephant realistic and the sunglasses show good form and perspective in comparison to the music. I used different values to help me portray different forms especially in the elephant, rosary, and sunglasses. The harsh light we used made the different values stand out to me and I think I did a good job showing that. Two principles I used specifically were rhythm/movement and unity. I think there’s a lot of movement in the subject matter especially because the rosary moves across the painting. I showed rhythm literally with a piece of music but also because it makes the eye move across each note. I think the piece is unified specifically through the color scheme. The main subjects were more or less primary colors with dark red, blue, and cream(ish). I chose a light orange for the background because it is an analogous color with the red and yellow elephant and rosary, and it complements the K because blue and orange are complementary colors.
The subject matter of my painting includes a plastic K, a stuffed elephant, a rosary, my sunglasses, and a piece of sheet music. I chose this content because they are all things that explain me and my interests. I got the plastic K at some point from my dad, so I thought that would be a good focal point. The elephant is there because elephants are my favorite animal and I have had a collection of stuffed elephants since I was young. The rosary represents my faith, and I wear my sunglasses everyday. The piece of music is one of my favorite instrumental songs and shows my love of music in general. The composition of the piece was not too hard for me to create. The K is in the back because it’s the largest object, and the rosary, sunglasses, and music are on the right to balance the elephant on the left.

Brenda - Portrait
Two elements that I think I did well with in my painting are form and color. I spent a great amount of time trying to get the form of her face perfect and I tried to bring across the form in her shirt as well through different values. I tried hard to use the realistic color scheme of the original photo, not only through the skin tones but also the colors of her shirt and overalls. I think the color scheme is funny because it looks so late 70’s, and I think I got that idea across. Two principles I focused on were pattern and proportion. The pattern in her shirt was especially difficult because it’s not a direct pattern as the flowers go all over the place, but I still tried to make it seem cohesive and not random. There was also pattern in the waves of her hair with different shades of one color. Proportion was obviously very important to keep in mind because if something on her face was out of proportion the whole painting would look strange. I think I did a good job keeping everything to scale.
The subject matter of the painting is my mom in her first grade school picture. She’s wearing a floral print shirt with jean overalls. I chose to paint this because I think the picture is so cute and thought it would be a good challenge. I didn’t have anything to do with the composition as I obviously didn’t take the picture, but I like how she’s perfectly centered.
